Yes, but how empty do I need to be Until the fog's dissipating and I'm burning clean? Hidden sweetness And secret medicine Given just to those Who've worn down their skin . Sprinkle rosewater over my head Done running from silence The boundary's my quest . You can't teach what you don't know You can't reach if you won't slow down Might as well slow it down . Sprinkle rosewater over my head Shake till you settle And lay down instead . I took my clothes off And laid in the dirt Rehearsed my last breath Returned to the first place I remember
2.
Tapestry of crooked teeth The symphony is pitchy One tug and it unravels Almost back to the fields Warm wool, tangled . Every no A journey frozen Every no Every yes An arrow flying To the unknown .

Your mama said You haven't left the garden But one more shovel full And we're to the ocean. It's mystery one layer down How do we look at ourselves If not through the eyes of another? . Empty out your pockets Throw away the map You'll be back here You'll be back Return before you know it Right back to the start It reappears with brand new meaning We own the night. We own the night. We own the night. . I'm a monster I'm a shimmering saint Yeah, those knots hurt We're gonna find our own way I felt your little hummingbird heart Handed to me in an airport parking lot My skin was still a bit too tight But now I'm ready to get lost . Empty out your pockets Throw away the map You'll be back here You'll be back Return before you know it Right back to the start It reappears with brand new meaning Look at yourself, looking at yourself Look at yourself, looking at yourself Look at yourself, looking at yourself

Empty house Here we are Drop those shoulders Let 'em sway You can't take any home with you Sneaking in to the place that light was made . Hold it up Soak it in Let it grow around so you can Feel it pull Your walls apart Necessary departures .
5.
Midnight forest Racing heart There's something written on the inside Of my eyelids But I don't know where to start It took five days of walking Before my mind settled down I remember the moment When my mental clouds . Separated Separated Separated Separate .

Let's drink the water Instead of worshipping the well Wound and healing Walking in the same door Wound and healing . whisperYell your secrets Listen well, I'm lost Landscapes in your cheekbones Let yourself get caught . Hemlock baths Crackling needles Rooted in our chest Swaying thoughts Touching branches The green outstretched . A perfect bird Has landed on your shoulder A perfect bird

We've been playing tetris Chipping away at that feeling on my skin Little deaths Scraping shit from floorboards We are young. We'll adjust our heads. As we walked up We saw you changing The singularity is near Garden trivia with the evergreens Not embarrassed of your year . They wanted to be The drugs themselves . Evaporating masterpiece You forgot to write it down I guess I want to tear What I was told to pieces . Cranberry moonrise From the middle of the lake Skyote fly-bys As we're making up songs with Sage These words are just a blanket Over mystery But the cover is always getting torn Letting out the beams

Sorry I did not know what to do I just wanted to I just wanted to Breathe Before sending this And hearing me say that out loud And trying to figure out if I'm doing the right thing Which I have no idea what I'm doing And I'm kind of ... Scared I think Not scared but... Yeah Sorry Thanks for being around for me To share this kind of stuff And uh... I don't know Um. I guess I am really sorry Because I only come forward, umm When I'm very in need of something And I'm sorry for that I'm trying to think of times I was there for you I really hope so But right now I'm kind of Lost, you know... And I just wanted to... I don't know... Thanks.

about

"From album title to cover image to auditory art, Rōsewater is the everyday alchemy of life steeped in living. It is silence perfumed with sweetness. It is course hands with a tender touch. It is wildflower made medicine. In this instance, the symphonic tincture earns its attributes from intention: a Canadian-born Brian Mulder, now living in Michigan, a state which he’s walked the breadth of by himself. Under his nails you might find wood varnish from carpentry; on his clothes, stains from painting houses; upon his bookshelf, Sufi mystics and existential psychotherapy.

Rōsewater comes as almost a capstone to Brian’s previous two albums. Holotropic, of 2016, was an examination of endings, how one can relearn living amidst existential upheaval. Qualiå, of 2019, was about letting this dust settle. And now, with Rōsewater, Brian celebrates the earned clarity, his new connections to mystery without mediation.

Inspiration for the album is multifaceted and spans epochs. The title track is the oldest and derives its name from a political drama film celebrating journalism and inner freedom. Another song, “Insecurity Party,” was born out of a pandemic compilation project amongst friends. Other influences range from lying naked in moss in the middle of the woods to Sunday poetry sessions with his partner. The result is a simple production: Brian performed and recorded everything on Rōsewater, except for Jeffrey Niemeier’s violins on the first track, himself. This is mostly guitars, piano, a tiny synth called the organelle, and Brian’s voice. The result is a reminder that, even in our most challenging times, there is always a walking path back to ourselves.”
